[Objective] To investigate the mental health status of primary caregivers for the first-time hospitalized patients with senile dementia,analyze the influencing factors.[Methods] A questionnaire survey was conducted among 160 primary caregivers of the first-time hospitalized patients with senile dementia with general condition questionnaire,self-rating depression scale (SDS) and self-rating anxiety scale (SAS).The effects of demographic characteristics on their psychological status were analyzed.[Results] The average score of anxiety and depression among primary caregivers of the first-time hospitalized patients was (56.4±15.4) points and (60.8±13.7) points respectively.Pension,payment of medical expenses,complicated with acute and chronic diseases of the first-time hospitalized patients with senile dementia,average income per person in family of the caregivers,nanny/caregivers,sharing the work by family members,nursing skills of the caregivers,and daily care time were the main factors affecting the mental state of caregivers.[Conclusion] It is necessary to pay more attention to the mental health status of the primary caregivers for the first-time hospitalized patients with senile dementia,and strengthen social support to improve their mental health level,so as to provide better care for the first hospitalized patients with senile dementia.
